Chapter One

Ever since Lucinda was young, she had been told stories of pure and dark witches that lived side by side with Humans. But the stories told weren’t always happy ones. Instead, many were of war between the pure and dark witches as well as between dark witches and Humans. The dark witches believed that the Humans were useless and didn’t deserve to be on the Earth. It was the pure witches’ job to protect the Humans and to keep the dark witches in line. The most important thing, however, was that the Humans didn’t know about the witches, because if they found out it would be harder for the pure witches to keep order and to protect the Humans.

As Lucinda grew older, she started to believe that the stories her mother told her were simply stories. But it wasn’t until her eighteenth birthday that she realized they were more than just stories.

The week of Lucinda’s eighteenth birthday was down and dreary with non-stop rain, so Lucinda’s mother, Stella, decided that she would take Lucinda to visit her grandmother for the weekend in the mountains. Their main purpose was to get some herbs that grew only in Wyoming, but her mother thought it would be good for Lucinda to get some fresh air as well.

“I don’t see why we have to spend the weekend with Grandmother Maria,” complained Lucinda, “I mean, all we are going to do is picking up herbs.”

“There are a couple of things your grandmother and I need to discuss with you and I also want to show you a few things,” Stella said calmly, “Now behave yourself, we will be there shortly.”

“Fine,” Lucinda said as she looks out the window.

By the time they arrived it had gotten late, the sun had already set and Stella and Lucinda were hungry. As they pulled up, Maria came out to greet them. Marias house was simple yet elegant. It was two stories high with a balcony to two of the rooms upstairs; each room had an astounding view to the land around the house. Near the house was a beautiful crystal lake with forest surrounding it.

“Welcome to my lovely home.” Maria greeted them as they walked up to the house.

“It’s nice to see you again after such a long time Maria.” Stella replied as she hugged Maria.

“Yes, I have to say it has been a while,” Maria spoke cheerfully “Now, what has brought you up to the high mountains of Wyoming.”

“Well, I was hoping to gather some of the herbs that you grow and to introduce you to my daughter Lucinda.” Stella said with a calm smile.

“That would be wonderful and you are welcome to as many herbs as you need. It is nice to meet you Lucinda.” Maria said with a smile.

“It is nice to meet you, Maria.” Lucinda said while she tried to ignore her growling stomach.

“Why don’t we go inside now? I bet you are hungry after your long day of traveling.” Maria told them as she led Lucinda and Stella to the house.

“That would be great.” Lucinda and Stella said simultaneously.

Right after supper, Maria guided Lucinda and Stella through the garden to the greenhouse where Stella could pick out the herbs she would take home. As Lucinda looked at the different herbs, she realized that she knew most of them, but never recalled seeing them in her life. Stella noticed this and was pleased to see her daughters’ interests go towards herbs and maybe amulets too. Once Stella had gathered the herbs that she needed, Maria escorted them back to the house where she guided Lucinda and Stella to their rooms.

Lucinda’s room was lovely lavender color with some unique pieces of ancient art compared to her simple ice blue colored room with common pieces of furniture. Stella’s room had many colors and near the closet was a dresser which held many unique stones that Lucinda was not to see until a later time. After saying goodnight to Maria, Stella and Lucinda went to their own rooms.

Even though it was late in the night, Lucinda couldn’t go to sleep. She decided to get out of bed and sit on the balcony. The air was cool on her face but she liked it. She never got to go and sit outside since they were so close to the neighbors at home. Something then flashed above her and she looked up. She knew it was a shooting star and smiled. She closed her eyes, took a breath and made a wish. After a few minutes she had begun to feel tired, so she went back inside, closed the door and went to bed.

Early the next morning as Stella headed down to breakfast, she ran into Maria and asked if she could show Lucinda the amulet room and tell her more about her heritage. Maria wasn’t sure if it was the right time to introduce Lucinda to things yet, but she believed that if Stella thought she was ready that she could allow Lucinda into the amulet room with supervision.

“This here Lucinda is Marias’ amulet room,” Stella said proudly as she walked into the room. “It holds amulets created centuries back. The amulets are believed to protect us from evil presences.”

“What kind of evil?” Lucinda asked curiously.

“Evil that has been here for centuries, such as ghost, spirits and witches.” Stella said carefully.

“But witches don’t exist and especially not ghosts.” Lucinda commented back.
“You never know what’s real until you see it for yourself, I guess.” Stella simply responded.

Chapter Two

The next week passed very quickly for Lucinda once classes resumed the Monday after spring break ended. Lucinda was very impatient for the week to end because the next Saturday was her eighteenth birthday. Lucinda hadn’t forgotten about last weekend’s trip but she wasn’t able to put it aside except for when she thought about her birthday plans.

That Friday as Lucinda was heading home from school, she realized she had left her chemistry book in her locker and she had a lot of homework to do that weekend. Lucinda decided that she should run back and get it so she could get started. She turned quickly around and walked back to the school as the last buses were leaving. Right as she reached her locker she ran into her old friend Elli and dropped her books in the process.

“Hey, long time, no see Lucinda” Elli said as he helped her pick up her books.

“Oh Elli, thanks. How have you been?” Lucinda said while trying to not drop her books again.

“I’ve been good,” Elli replied casually, “I heard that you aren’t having a party this year.”

“No, I thought I would have a small family gathering, but you can still come if you want.” Lucinda explained.

“I would love to come, but I have to do some things with my parents this weekend. It’s very important. But how about we go get a cup of coffee or something and then I can give you your gift, even though it’s early.” Elli said sadly.

“That sounds terrific, where would you like to go?” Lucinda said cheerfully.

“I was thinking of the new coffee shop down the street. What was its name again? I believe it was Coffee Joes Coffee and Snack Shop.” Elli said smiling widely.

“Great, let’s go before it gets too windy.” Lucinda said quickly.

Fifteen minutes later, Lucinda and Elli arrive at Coffee Joes Coffee and Snack shop. Right as Lucinda opens the door to the shop she smells the fresh brewed coffee and tons of newly baked cakes and tarts. Lucinda decided that she would like a piece of the delicious coconut cake and a cup of hazelnut coffee and Elli settled with a piece of red velvet cake and a cup of hazelnut coffee as well. Since there wasn’t many there, they decided to sit in a light corner of the shop in a small booth.

As Lucinda was eating her piece of coconut cake, Elli pulled out a small box wrapped in blue and purple striped wrapping paper with a red bow on top of it. Elli handed her the box and said, “Here Lucinda. I know it’s not much but I hope you like it.”

Lucinda opens the box quickly, while being careful not to cut her finger on the wrapping paper. In the box though, was a gift Lucinda never expected? A pure silver amulet, with a combination of rubies and sapphires surrounding a large amethyst crystal in the middle.

“This is amazing! Where did you get this?” Lucinda says with a look of surprise.

“My mother has a collection of amulets and I thought that this one fitted you and my mother approved. So happy birthday Lucinda!” Elli says pleasantly.

“Thanks so much Elli, it is beautiful.” Lucinda says happily.

“I’m very glad you like it.” Elli says. Elli then looked outside and saw that it was getting very late. Elli then said, “We should probably get back.”

“Alright.” Lucinda replies. Lucinda and Elli then left the shop and headed their separate ways.

Chapter Three

Early the next morning Lucinda was awakened by the smell of waffles. Considering that waffles were her favorite food for breakfast, she got out of bed and went down stairs.

“Good morning sweetie.” Stella says with a smile, “Would you like waffles or eggs this morning?”

“Waffles of course!” Lucinda says sarcastically.

“I thought so, so that’s why I fixed plenty.” Stella says with a grin.

“So what’s the plan for today, since I have turned eighteen?” Lucinda asks curiously.

“Well, I was thinking of leaving that up to you, just remember that we have to be back to serve dinner this evening.” Says Stella.

“I was thinking we could go the antique shop in Charleston, South Carolina. Ellie’s mother found some interesting things up there the last time she went.” Lucinda simply says.

“That sounds wonderful. I haven’t been there in a very long time. They must have some new stuff in there by now.” Stella says with excitement, “With that said, finish eating and then we can go.”

“Alright, just give me five minutes.” Lucinda says quickly.

After Lucinda had put her plate in the sink, she ran upstairs to change. Lucinda took a quick look through her closet and decided on a pair of jeans and a red short-sleeve top. She then found a pair of blue sneakers. On the way out the door, Lucinda decided to put on the amulet that Ellie had given her the night before. She also remembered to grab her jacket off the back of the door.

An hour later, Lucinda and Stella arrived at the antique shop in Charleston. The Antique shop was called Nobellas. Nobellas was a small shop with high ceilings and uniquely aged exterior.

“Now, if there’s anything you like in here, don’t be afraid to ask me to get it for you.” Stella tells Lucinda.

“Alright, I’ll let you know if I find anything.” Lucinda says hurriedly.

Lucinda was quickly heading towards the collectables and books when she saw a collection of wolf antiques. While looking through them she spotted a book about ancient societies of witches that was closely related to the wolves. Along with it came a dream catcher, which Lucinda thought was very odd since it didn’t really relate, but since she found it interesting and because it only cost thirty dollars, she asked her mother for it.

“Oh, that’s so beautiful.” Stella says when she sees the book cover. “You will do well with the book around.

“Uh, thanks.” Lucinda says uncertainly.

As soon as they got back Lucinda walked to the house and quickly went up to her room. She then closed the door and put her coat on the back hook. She laid the bag on her bed and sat down with the book in her lap.

The cover of the book was ancient but the pages inside were fairly modern. Lucinda looked back at the cover and was interested in the title, which was “Societies of the world”. Lucinda didn’t see why the book had caught her attention. But after looking through the book for some time, she came across a society that had several family names that she recognized. One was her own family name, Fang, and the other was Ellie’s, which was Northwitch. Lucinda was curious and uncertain what this meant and decided that she would mention it after dinner.

Several minutes passed by before Lucinda was ready to go down to dinner. She walked casually down the stair and into the dining room. The room was bright with a chandelier hanging above cherry table. At the table several people were already seated. She walked up to her Grandmother, Maria, and said hello. She then walked over to her cousin Sally. Lucinda greeted her with a friendly smile and then sat down next to her mother. On the table placed in the center was roasted chicken, potatoes, green beans and, Lucinda’s favorite, apple pie. They took their time and ate peacefully, lightly chatting and talking about their day.

Once they were done they moved to the living room for desert and to relax. Maria went into the other room and came back with a descent sized bag and gave it to Lucinda. Lucinda looked into the bag and saw a music box. The song that was played was slow but heartwarming. Lucinda’s next gift was from Sally, which was in a small box. Lucinda opened to find a silver wolf pendant on a silver chain. Stella’s gift was a new camera so that Lucinda could take pictures of her life and friends. With that done, Lucinda thanks Maria and Sally for their gifts. Maria and Sally left soon after and as Lucinda was climbing the stairs back to her room, Stella noticed the amulet around her neck.

“Oh, that’s gorgeous, where did you get that?” Stella asks.

“Elli gave it to me yesterday,” Lucinda says with a smile. “I’m glad you like it.”
“That’s wonderful; he is a really sweet guy to give you that” Stella says with a grin.

“Oh stop it!” Says Lucinda, “Um mom, I was wanting to ask you something.”
“What is it?” Stella asks Lucinda with uncertainty.

“You know that book you got me earlier today, well I’ve looked at it and I found something interesting. In a list of ancient societies our family name, as well as, Elli’s is in there.” Lucinda says calmly, “What does it mean?”

“It means I can finally tell you more about our heritage that I couldn’t tell you about until today.” Stella says with a sigh.

“What do you mean?” Lucinda asks.

“In this world there are regular people and there are others. In our family we can’t tell our children about their heritage for safety reasons” Stella calmly says, “It is because…we are witches, but not just any witches, we are pure witches.”

“No way, you have got to be joking. Are you trying to tell me that all those stories where true.” Lucinda says loudly.

“Most of the stories were real, and a couple I made up.” Stella says softly, “You and I came from a strong line witches that are able to make amulets and potions. That is why you knew so many herbs when we visited your grandmother Maria last weekend. What bothers me, though, is how you were suddenly interested in the wolf part of the society.” Says Stella.

“Wait, that means that Elli has known!” Lucinda says questionably.

“Yes and that is also why he went to Lightford,” Stella simply says, “Lightford is a unique school for young witches to learn the basics and to discover further abilities. Once you graduate from Raven High, you will have the option to go there, even if it’s for one to two years to learn the basics."

“What if I choose to ignore my heritage?” Lucinda asks.

“If you choose to ignore it you can go on with school, but you could be in danger considering you are of a pure line of pure witches.” Stella says uncertainly, “By going to Lightford you will learn more about your powers and about yourself.”

“So you’re saying that by not going to Lightford and learning the basics I could be at risk?” Lucinda asks

“Yes, but you don’t have to go.” Stella answers, “Even if you choose not to go, I can teach you some of the basics before you graduate so you will be somewhat prepared.”

“I don’t know if I want to go, but I want to learn.” Lucinda says excitedly, “When do we start?”

“We will work on the basics on the weekends, starting next week.” Stella says proudly.
